Instability of solitary waves in the KdV-type equations

We revisit the instability of solitons in the critical and supercritcal cases of the KdV equation, in particular the fundamental result of Martel-Merle about instability of solitary waves for the critical KdV equation. Then we investigate a similar phenomenon in the higher dimensional generalizations of the KdV equation, called the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. This is joint work with Luiz Farah and Justin Holmer.
